The Town’s deadline for obtaining or renewing business licenses for 2023 was April 17th. If you have not renewed or obtained a new license for 2023, you are in violation.
The Town Code related to operating a business in town is as follows:
Section 38-4 requires individuals conducting a business or engaging in a profession, trade or occupation to obtain a license from the Town.
Section 38-6 requires a separate license to be obtained for each place of business.
Section 38-8 requires the license to be displayed in a conspicuous place at the place of business.
Section 38-3 states that violations constitute a class 3 misdemeanor and each day in violation constitutes a separate offense. Per state law, class 3 misdemeanors carry a fine of up to
$500.
Beginning June 15th, any business that has not obtained a 2023 license will be the recipient of a Scarlet Letter-a placard on the door stating “This business is not licensed, and is operating illegally in the Town of Cape Charles.” The placard shall not be removed until the license has been obtained. These businesses shall encounter further public humiliation by having their names published on the Town’s website, Facebook page, and a future issue of the Cape Charles Gazette.
