With funding in place, the Kings Creek Dredging Project is scheduled to begin in September. The work will begin after Labor Day and finish no later than December 31st. The project is estimated to take around eight weeks.
Due to the aquaculture hatchery in Kings Creek, there are dredging restrictions between January and July, so the work window is between the beach season and the aquaculture restriction.
The sediment will be transported by pipeline from the dredge to the northern part of the Cape Charles public beach. The Town will use heavy equipment to spread the sand at the pipe’s outfall. The sediment has been sampled and tested and is beach quality.
Some parts of the beach will be closed during the operation, however, Town Manager John Hozey told the Mirror that the actual locations have not been determined.
The Kings Creek channel at its mouth is narrow and there will be some challenges between the dredge and the boat traffic.
