CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Cape Charles Town Manager reported this week that he is working with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (VAW) and Canonie Atlantic Railroad to explore opportunities for affordable housing, including the need for water and sewer services and potential easements. The town has been under pressure to address housing shortages as the Eastern Shore experiences increased demand from both seasonal residents and the year-round workforce.
He also met with the Cape Charles Harbor Manager to discuss upcoming waterfront projects. The harbor is a key economic driver for the town, supporting commercial, recreational and tourism activity, and has been the focus of ongoing planning for upgrades and improvements.
In addition, the town submitted a $2 million grant application Sept. 8 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rural and Tribal Assistance Pilot Program. If awarded, the funding would help advance the Beach Front Master Plan, which includes a full survey, final design, environmental compliance, and preparation for future grant opportunities. The plan is intended to guide development and long-term resiliency along Cape Charles’ popular public beach.
The Town Manager also took part in the quarterly Main Street Business Connect meeting at Hotel Cape Charles, where local business owners and community leaders gather to share updates and coordinate on economic development initiatives.
