CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Town officials say safety repairs are underway at the Central Park playground after several parents raised concerns about deteriorating equipment and hazardous conditions.
According to a ‘Report a Concern’ submitted to the town on behalf of multiple parents, several issues were identified throughout the playground area, including jagged concrete at the base of the fireman’s pole, an insufficient layer of mulch beneath play structures, an exposed concrete pad under the spring-mounted “bouncing horses,” and an exposed wire running along the southern fence line. Parents also noted signs of deterioration at the base of the swing set.
Town Manager and the Public Works Director visited the playground to inspect each of the concerns. Following the site review, the Town said Public Works staff will apply liquid rubber to cover the exposed concrete bases and will order additional mulch to bring the play area up to safety standards.
The swing set, while showing signs of aging, was determined not to be in immediate need of replacement, officials said. However, the Town plans to revisit the issue during the upcoming budget planning process, with the expectation of requesting funds to replace the swing set next year.
