CAPE CHARLES, Va. — With Christmas and New Year’s Day both falling on Thursdays this holiday season, Cape Charles officials are granting town employees additional days off on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026 and Wednesday December 24, 2025— a move leaders say would recognize a year of unusually heavy workloads and a complex office relocation.
Town offices will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 26 and Jan. 1, and Jan. 2. Under the current schedule, Jan. 2 is a regular workday. Town staff noted that the week between Christmas and New Year’s typically operates with minimal staffing because many employees use vacation time, and demand for services is historically low.
In a briefing to council, Town Manager Rick Keuroglian highlighted the substantial strain staff have carried over the past year — including the relocation of Town Hall to temporary offices in late October. Employees spent months preparing for the move, packing, coordinating logistics and adjusting operations as they settled into the new space. The transition required significant time, flexibility and teamwork across departments.
The proposed additional holidays serve, they said, as a meaningful gesture of appreciation for employees following an intense year and a demanding fall season.
Essential services — including public safety, utilities and other critical operations — would remain fully staffed under normal holiday protocols.
