CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Construction on the second phase of the Harbor Boardwalk Reconstruction project is more than halfway complete and remains on track to finish by the end of January, according to an update from the town’s Capital Projects Manager Bob Panek.
The contractor uncovered additional structural damage during the project that required corrective work, but the issues were addressed without significantly altering the construction timeline.
In other infrastructure updates, construction of two new accessible parking spaces on Plum Street has been completed and successfully passed final inspection by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Progress is also underway on plans to establish permanent public restrooms near downtown. The town has negotiated a lease agreement for 7 Strawberry Street with the property owner, which is now under review by the Town Attorney. The building owner is currently developing build-out plans and cost estimates for the restroom facility.
At the harbor, town staff are working with the Harbor Master to prepare an Invitation for Bid (IFB) for a new fuel tank monitoring system, a project intended to improve safety and regulatory compliance at the marina.
Meanwhile, preparations are also underway for the next phase of pedestrian infrastructure improvements. The Capital Projects Manager reported that an IFB is being developed for the Fig Street portion of the Sidewalk Infill Project. Final measurements are pending from the Historic District Civic League before the bid documents can be completed.
