CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Residents will have a chance to celebrate community pride and history on Saturday, March 21, as the Town of Cape Charles marks its 140th birthday with a day of volunteer cleanup efforts, a community picnic, and free document shredding.
The celebration will begin at 10 a.m., when residents can choose to spruce up their own yards or join town staff and members of the Town Council at the Cape Charles Beach Pavilion to form volunteer teams working in public spaces across town. The town’s Public Works Department will provide equipment and bags for the cleanup efforts.
Town officials say the event is intended to help prepare Cape Charles for the busy tourist season while encouraging residents to take pride in the community’s appearance.
At noon, volunteers and residents will gather in Central Park for a community picnic. The mayor and members of Town Council will grill lunch for attendees.
Participation in the cleanup is not required to attend the picnic, and residents are encouraged to stop by even if they cannot volunteer earlier in the day.
Town officials say the gathering also offers a rare opportunity for residents to meet informally with town leaders and staff before the start of the summer tourism season.
In addition to the celebration activities, a mobile shredding truck will be available for residents who wish to safely dispose of personal documents. The shredding service will be located at Town Hall, at the corner of Plum Street and Tazewell Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Residents may bring documents with paper clips or staples attached, which can be processed by the shredder. However, officials ask that binders and binder clips be removed before documents are dropped off.
Cape Charles, founded in 1886 as a planned railroad and ferry town on the Chesapeake Bay, continues to mark milestones with community-focused events that bring residents together.
Town officials say the March 21 event is meant to celebrate that tradition while helping keep the town looking its best ahead of the spring and summer seasons.
