CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council has voted to take ownership of two electric vehicle charging stations in the Mason Avenue parking lot, acquiring the equipment from A&N Electric Cooperative for $1.
A&N Electric Cooperative, or ANEC, installed the two EV charging stations in the municipal parking lot in the spring of 2024. The cooperative has since decided to discontinue its ownership and operation of the stations and approached the town about taking them over.
Under the asset transfer agreement presented to the Town Council, Cape Charles will assume ownership of the charging stations for a nominal purchase price of $1.
As part of its consideration of the transfer, the town received annual operating reports from ANEC covering 2024, 2025 and 2026 through July. The reports provide information on the duration of charging sessions, electricity consumption, charges collected for energy and parking, processing fees and total revenue generated by the stations.
Town officials also reviewed an ANEC invoice covering the stations’ operation from July 8 through Aug. 5, 2026.
The transfer shifts responsibility for the Mason Avenue charging stations from the electric cooperative to the town, allowing Cape Charles to determine how the equipment will be operated and maintained going forward.
The chargers are located in the Mason Avenue parking lot in the town’s commercial district and have provided a public charging option for electric vehicle drivers since their installation roughly two years ago.
The council’s action keeps the existing charging infrastructure in place while transitioning ownership of the equipment to the town.
