CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Historic District Review Board approved renovation and construction proposals for three properties during its latest meeting, allowing a mix of preservation work, material upgrades and new construction within the town’s historic district.
The board approved an application for 536 Randolph Ave. to renovate the home’s front porch while preserving its overall appearance. The project includes replacing the existing tongue-and-groove wood porch flooring with TimberTech Advanced PVC decking, installing a new wood beadboard ceiling, adding square TimberTech balustrades in place of traditional wood spindles, replacing the existing wood railings with square TimberTech Classic Composite railings, and rebuilding the front brick steps.
The board also approved improvements at 11 Park Row, where the property owner plans to replace the existing front porch wood balustrades with composite balustrades matching the current design. The application also includes replacing 16 wood windows in one residential unit with composite windows of the same configuration and converting two side-by-side windows into a single double-hung window. Existing window sills will remain in place.
At 640 Washington Ave., the board approved the demolition of an existing 222-square-foot, one-story accessory structure and its associated ramp. In its place, the property owner will construct a new 520-square-foot, one-and-a-half-story accessory structure featuring side steps and a landing.
The Historic District Review Board reviews proposed exterior changes within Cape Charles’ Historic District to ensure projects are consistent with the town’s historic preservation guidelines while allowing property owners to maintain and improve their buildings. The board evaluates projects based on factors such as architectural compatibility, materials, scale and design to help preserve the character of one of Virginia’s largest contiguous historic districts.
The approvals allow the property owners to move forward with their respective projects in accordance with the plans submitted to the board.
