ACCOMAC, Va. — Eastern Shore property owners, local officials and others interested in redeveloping potentially contaminated properties will have an opportunity to meet individually with a state brownfields specialist on Oct. 15.
The Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission will host private informational sessions with Karen Weber, brownfields coordinator for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
Sessions will be held at the A-NPDC office, 23372 Front St. in Accomac.
Brownfields are properties where expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence — or potential presence — of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants. They can include former industrial sites, commercial properties and mixed-use buildings along traditional main street corridors.
According to the A-NPDC, brownfield properties can be found throughout Virginia’s Eastern Shore and may offer opportunities for new investment and economic development.
Cleaning up and returning such properties to productive use can take advantage of existing infrastructure while reducing pressure to develop previously undisturbed land. Redevelopment can also support job creation, expand local tax bases and improve the appearance of communities while addressing environmental concerns.
The Oct. 15 sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to privately discuss brownfield issues and potential redevelopment with Weber.
Appointments are required. For more information or to schedule a session, contact Sherry Dudas at 757-787-2936, ext. 129, or sdudas@esvaplan.org.
The Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission has served as the Eastern Shore of Virginia’s regional planning organization since 1970. The commission supports local planning and community development efforts, provides technical assistance on behalf of the Commonwealth and works on issues of regional importance.

In the end, Lacy, the architect does what the customer wants, not vice versa. If the customer wanted or could…
She apparently is not into symmetry!
