CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Kiptopeke State Park will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, with a full day of programs focused on bird migration, conservation, outdoor exploration and nature photography.
Activities will be centered around Picnic Shelter 1 and the park’s hawkwatch platform, a longtime destination for birders on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. For nearly 50 years, experts at Kiptopeke have monitored the fall migration, recording more than 30,000 raptors annually as they make their way south.
The day begins at 10 a.m. with opening remarks and short presentations on the history of Kiptopeke State Park and the hawkwatch.
At 10:30 a.m., visitors can join guided walks along several routes through the park, including the Osprey Boardwalk and North Beach, Baywoods Loop Trail, Raptor Trail to Taylor Pond and the Wood Warbler Boardwalk.
At 11:30 a.m., Marina Pierce will present a program on nature photography, offering tips for capturing wildlife and landscapes using any type of camera.
A lunch break begins at 12:30 p.m. Visitors may bring their own lunch or purchase food from the Deep South BBQ food truck.
A second round of guided walks begins at 1:30 p.m., again offering participants several routes and opportunities to explore Kiptopeke’s diverse habitats.
At 2:30 p.m., Mario Balitbit, a migratory bird specialist with The Nature Conservancy, will present “Tracking Shorebirds on the Virginia Eastern Shore and Beyond.”
Daytime activities conclude with a wrap-up at 3:30 p.m.
Throughout the day, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation interpretive staff will offer additional programs and activities. The park’s hawkwatch platform will also remain open throughout the event, giving visitors an opportunity to observe one of the Eastern Shore’s signature natural spectacles.
The celebration continues after dark. Park staff will lead an Owl Prowl at 7 p.m., giving participants a chance to listen and search for some of Kiptopeke’s nocturnal residents.
Registration for World Migratory Bird Day activities is encouraged.
