ACCOMAC, Va. — During its regular meeting on September 17, 2025, the Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass a resolution urging that the Northeastern Tiger Beetle be removed from the federal Endangered Species Act.
The decision stemmed from concerns raised earlier in the summer when dredging plans in Northampton County faced complications due to the beetle’s protected status. Spoils from a channel dredging project were proposed to be placed at Tangier Beach, but the plan was halted because the beach is home to a population of the Northeastern Tiger Beetle, a federally listed endangered species.
Supervisor Crockett made a motion to draft and send a letter to state and federal delegates requesting that the species be delisted. The motion was seconded by Vice-Chair and passed unanimously.
Board members expressed frustration that the beetle’s protected status continues to interfere with local maintenance and restoration projects along the Shore’s coastline.
The Northeastern Tiger Beetle, a small, fast-moving insect found along sandy beaches, has long been a point of contention between environmental protection efforts and local infrastructure needs. The species, once widespread along the Atlantic Coast, has declined significantly due to shoreline erosion, human activity, and habitat loss.
If approved by higher authorities, the Board’s resolution would urge state and federal agencies to reconsider the beetle’s endangered classification, citing impacts on local shoreline management.
