“TREASURIES – U.S. 10-year note flirts with 3% yield after German inflation scare”

    By Davide Barbuscia

    August 19, 2022

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury yields rose on Friday with the benchmark 10-year note nearly hitting 3% after Germany reported record-high increases in monthly producer prices, which are seen as a leading indicator for inflation.

Producer prices in July in Germany – the euro zone’s leading economy – leapt 37.2% from the same time last year and 5.3% from June, mainly because of rising energy costs.

German bond yields surged, with the 10-year yield hitting a four-week high, as the data was seen as reinforcing fears of “stagflation” – a combination of high inflation and low growth.

“The epicenter of the backup in bond yields is coming from Europe,” said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at John Hancock Investment Management.

“The German PPI (Producer Price Index) is causing European yields to rise, and that’s rippling across global bond yields.”

The U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury yield, an important barometer for mortgage rates and other financial instruments, rose about 10 basis points from its close on Thursday to a month high of 2.988%.

“Record jump in German producer prices adds to gloomy outlook”

By Miranda Murray and Paul Carrel

    August 19, 2022

BERLIN, Aug 19 (Reuters) – German producer prices jumped at the fastest pace on record in July, underscoring the gloomy outlook for Europe’s largest economy, which is stuck in a stranglehold of soaring costs and weakening growth due to the Ukraine war.

Producer prices — a leading indicator for inflation — surged 37.2% on the year, the biggest rise since records began in 1949, the federal statistics office said on Friday.

The month-on-month rise, 5.3%, was also the highest on record.

“The outlook for the further development (of the economy) is currently noticeably gloomy,” the finance ministry said in its August monthly report, published on Friday, adding that it was marked by “a high degree of uncertainty”.

The record increases in producer prices were primarily driven by skyrocketing energy prices, which as a whole were up 105% compared with the same month last year, the office said.

The German economy stagnated in the second quarter, with the war in Ukraine, soaring energy prices, the COVID-19 pandemic and supply disruptions bringing it to the edge of a downturn.

“The significantly lower gas supplies from Russia, the persistently high price increases for energy and, increasingly, other goods, as well as the longer-than-expected supply chain disruptions, also in connection with China’s zero-COVID policy, are weighing heavily on the economy’s development,” the finance ministry said.

Feeding into already high energy costs, the German government will impose levies on gas consumers from Oct. 1 that will add several hundred euros to the average family’s annual energy bill.

Higher energy prices mean inflation is unlikely to cool off anytime soon: Germany’s annual inflation rate in July was 8.5%, in line with the wider euro zone’s record rate of 8.9%.

Experts expect German inflation could reach around 9% following the expiration of relief measures, including cheaper public transport and a fuel tax cut, at the end of August.

In viewing the various governments instituted by mankind, we see their whole force reducible to two principles — the important springs which alone move the machines, and give them their intended influence and control, are force and persuasion: by the former men are compelled, by the latter they are drawn.

We denominate a government despotic or free, as the one or other principle prevails in it.

In the representative branch we must expect chiefly to collect the confidence of the people, and in it to find almost entirely the force of persuasion.

In forming this branch, therefore, several important considerations must be attended to.

It must possess abilities to discern the situation of the people and of public affairs, a disposition to sympathize with the people, and a capacity and inclination to make laws congenial to their circumstances and condition: it must afford security against interested combinations, corruption and influence; it must possess the confidence, and have the voluntary support of the people.

“Europe is in for 5 to 10 ‘difficult’ winters as energy prices soar, Belgian prime minister says”

    Huileng Tan

    23 August 2022

Europe could be in for a stretch of long, hard winters as energy prices surge to record highs amid the war in Ukraine.

“The next 5 to 10 winters are going to be difficult,” said Belgian Prime Minster Alexander De Croo at an event in Belgium on Monday, as reported by broadcaster VRT.

“In a number of sectors, it is really difficult to deal with those high energy prices.”

“We are monitoring this closely, but we must be transparent: the coming months will be difficult, the coming winters will be difficult.”

De Croo’s comments come as Europe faces an energy crunch exacerbated by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The continent depends on Russia for its natural gas needs, importing about 40% of its fuel from the country.

But Russia has slowed gas flows via the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20% of its capacity, citing technical issues.

European officials say the move is retaliation against sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine.

Belgium imports just 6.5% of its natural gas needs from Russia, according to The Brussels Times, citing official data.

However, energy bills are still going up in Belgium as prices have soared on the global markets.

On Monday, benchmark Dutch natural gas futures jumped almost 20% in one day to a fresh record high on news of an unscheduled three-day shutdown of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from August 31.

Surging energy prices pushed the cost of electricity in Belgium on the wholesale market to a fresh record high on Sunday, per The Brussels Times.

This in turn translates to record high energy bills for households.

Other countries in Europe are also expecting energy bills to continue rising.

In the UK, household energy bills in early 2023 are expected to be four times higher than they were between 2018 and 2021, per the Financial Times.

In Germany, energy bills are likely to double for households as companies pass on rising natural-gas costs, the AFP reported in early August, citing an electricity provider.

ADAM KINZINGER: When we present our full findings, we will recommend changes to laws and policies to guard against another January 6th.

The reason that’s imperative is that the forces Donald Trump ignited that day have not gone away.

The militant intolerant ideologies, the militias, the alienation and the disaffection, the weird fantasies and disinformation, they’re all still out there ready to go.

That’s the elephant in the room.

    1. What these WITCH HUNTERS are planning to do, according to Democrat WITCH HUNTER Adam Kinzinger in his own words on PRIMETIME TV, is to brand people in America, to smear people, and to make laws against people in America who do not swear fealty to Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, who aim to make this country a one-party political system by outlawing any competition, as their hero Zelensky has done in Ukraine, and as Hitler did in Nazi Germany, and although that is unconstitutional in the U.S., that will not stop the Democrats, who wadded up OUR Constitution into a little ball on 6 January 2021 and flushed it down their toilet.

What Democrat WITCH HUNTER Adam Kinzinger is talking about is called ATTAINDER, and what he is proposing violates Article I, Section 9, Clause 3, wherein is stated “No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”

“Bills of attainder . . . are such special acts of the legislature, as inflict capital punishments upon persons supposed to be guilty of high offences, such as treason and felony, without any conviction in the ordinary course of judicial proceedings.”

“If an act inflicts a milder degree of punishment than death, it is called a bill of pains and penalties.”

“In such cases, the legislature assumes judicial magistracy, pronouncing upon the guilt of the party without any of the common forms and guards of trial, and satisfying itself with proofs, when such proofs are within its reach, whether they are conformable to the rules of evidence, or not.”

“In short, in all such cases, the legislature exercises the highest power of sovereignty, and what may be properly deemed an irresponsible despotic discretion, being governed solely by what it deems political necessity or expediency, and too often under the influence of unreasonable fears, or unfounded suspicions.”

The phrase “bill of attainder,” as used in this clause and in clause 1 of § 10, applies to bills of pains and penalties as well as to the traditional bills of attainder.

The prohibition embodied in this clause is not to be narrowly construed in the context of traditional forms but is to be interpreted in accordance with the designs of the framers so as to preclude trial by legislature, which would violate the separation of powers.

The clause thus prohibits all legislative acts, “no matter what their form, that apply either to named individuals or to easily ascertainable members of a group in such a way as to inflict punishment on them without a judicial trial.”
