CAPE CHARLES, Va. — President John F. Kennedy’s proclamation designating May 15 as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week surrounding it as National Police Week continues to resonate across the United States, reminding citizens of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers.
In Cape Charles, Virginia, members of the local Police Department are honored for their indispensable role in protecting the rights and freedoms of the town’s residents. The department’s dedication to safeguarding life and property, maintaining order, and upholding justice is paramount.
Since the tragic death of the first recorded law enforcement officer in 1786, over 23,921 officers across the nation have made the ultimate sacrifice while on duty. On May 15, 2024, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold its 36th Candlelight Vigil, where the names of the 136 officers lost in 2023 will be solemnly read aloud, honoring their bravery and service to their communities.
In a show of respect and appreciation for law enforcement, the Cape Charles Town Council, during their April 18, 2024 Regular Meeting, adopted Proclamation 20240418C. This proclamation designates May 15, 2024, as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week of May 12-18, 2024, as National Police Week. It serves as a tribute to the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice or have been disabled in the line of duty, as well as an opportunity to publicly recognize the invaluable service provided by law enforcement officers across the nation.
As National Police Week approaches, communities nationwide will come together to honor and remember the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving others.
