CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council is actively addressing two vacant positions on the Planning Commission, a crucial step in maintaining the town’s governance and planning efforts.
The vacancies were publicly advertised in the Cape Charles Gazette and through social media channels such as Facebook, drawing the attention of interested individuals. Following the call for applications, the Town Council convened in an executive session on January 18, 2024, to review the received applications and strategize on how best to fill the vacancies.
One of the positions on the Commission is intended to complete the term of Mr. Michael Strub, whose tenure expired on October 31, 2023. Despite the expiration of his term, Mr. Strub agreed to continue serving on the Commission until a suitable replacement could be appointed. Notably, Mr. Strub also holds the position of Planning Commission representative to the Historic District Review Board.
In a prior session on August 31, 2023, the Town Council conducted interviews to fill various positions, including those on the Library Board, Historic District Review Board, and Wetlands & Coastal Dune Board. During this session, Ms. Elizabeth Wright was appointed as an alternate to the Historic District Review Board. Ms. Wright expressed her interest in serving on the Planning Commission and has been actively participating in Planning Commission and Historic District Review Board meetings as an observer.
Given her dedication and involvement, the Town Council reviewed Ms. Wright’s application and reached a consensus to appoint her to the Planning Commission to fulfill the remainder of Mr. Strub’s term.
Town Council will appoint Ms. Wright at a Special Meeting on February 1, 2024 at the Cape Charles Civic Center.
An executive session will be scheduled for a future date to interview the remaining applicants vying for the second vacant position on the Planning Commission.
