CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Planning Commission continues to monitor two ongoing “demolition by neglect” cases as efforts progress to bring the properties into compliance with town codes.
At 649 Monroe Avenue, officials have re-engaged with the contractor for the property to clarify whether the owners have approved the proposed renovation plans and when work might begin. The contractor has since responded that the owners intend to make changes to the initial renovation proposal and will resubmit revised plans.
Meanwhile, no visible work has been completed at 122 Pine Street. Planning and Zoning staff have informed the owner of the required repairs needed to bring the property into compliance. The department is currently evaluating next steps to ensure corrective action is taken.
The town’s demolition by neglect ordinance is intended to prevent historic or significant structures from deteriorating due to lack of maintenance.
Who pays for the demolition of these properties? What safeguards and insurance are put in place for neighboring properties?
It belongs to the building department, not planning and zoning. It states in the building code .
Editor’s Note: Thanks for the update, we will take your word for it. Zoning Compliance Office & Planning Assistant list the violations, so not 100% how to report this. Thanks again.
Who pays for the demolition of these properties and what is done to protect the homes near the demolition?
You never own your home, once it is paid for, nor can do what you want with it once you thought you owned it.
