CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Eastern Shore will go to the dogs next weekend as Cape Charles welcomes the high-flying, water-splashing excitement of the “Bark in the Park” DockDogs competition. The two-day event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5, and promises to be a showcase for canine athleticism and family fun.
DockDogs, billed as the world’s premier canine aquatics competition, has become one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the country. Launched in 1997, the competition features dogs of all breeds and sizes leaping from a 40-foot dock into a large pool of water. Events test height, distance, and speed, with categories such as Big Air, where dogs leap for distance, Extreme Vertical, which measures how high they can jump, and Speed Retrieve, a fast-paced race to snag a bumper at the end of the pool.
The sport has grown into a national circuit, attracting both serious competitors and first-time participants eager to see their dogs make a splash. DockDogs events are known for their friendly, festival-like atmosphere where families, pet lovers, and spectators gather to cheer on the four-legged athletes.
Cape Charles’ “Bark in the Park” will bring that excitement to the Eastern Shore, with food and merchandise vendors on-site, making the event a destination for both dog enthusiasts and those simply looking for a lively weekend outing.
“DockDogs is really about celebrating the bond between people and their pets,” organizers said. “It’s as much fun for first-time spectators as it is for seasoned fans of the sport.”
