CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles is fortunate to have a U.S. Coast Guard Station located on its waterfront. Station Cape Charles performs a variety of missions to ensure the safety and security of local and visiting mariners.
In appreciation of their service, the Cape Charles Yacht Club (CCYC) has traditionally hosted a reception for Coast Guard members and their families. This year, in coordination with the Town and Citizens for Central Park (CCP), CCYC has planned an expanded event to allow a broader segment of the community to express their gratitude.
The event will be held in Central Park on Saturday, August 3, alongside the 7:00 PM concert by Brasswind, presented by CCP. Before the concert, CCYC will host a reception for Coast Guard members and their families. At 6:45 PM, Mayor Charney will present the Town’s Proclamation of Appreciation to Chief Castillo.
In addition to the evening festivities, there will be opportunities to see the Coast Guard in action. Starting at 10:00 AM on August 3, the Coast Guard will display several surface and air assets at the old Ferry Dock property on the south side of Mason Avenue. A Search and Rescue Helicopter will demonstrate rescue operations in the harbor just off the dock, and an 87-foot Cutter will be docked alongside for public tours from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A small Patrol Boat from Station Cape Charles will also be on static display. Please note that these assets are operational, and their availability may change based on requirements.
Cape Charles Yacht Center, managed by Oasis Experiences, generously provided the Ferry Dock for this event. Following the Coast Guard demonstrations, Crab Slam events sponsored by The Shanty restaurant will start at 1:00 PM, featuring skiff races and boat docking practice runs.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to come by, say hello, and thank the Coast Guard for their dedicated service. This day promises to be filled with maritime activities for the entire community to enjoy.
