CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A request dated June 6, 2024, from Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Veber, owners and full-time residents of 507 Tazewell Avenue, seeks assistance in obtaining a designated handicap parking space in front of their residence. Mr. Veber has mobility challenges and can only take a few steps at a time with the assistance of a walker.
The Cape Charles Town Council will review the request at the next Regular Meeting on July 18.
Parking issues in the historic district are well known, with no reserved parking on the streets within the residential district. During the busy tourist season, residents often find it challenging to secure parking in front of or near their homes.
Mrs. Veber contacted the local VDOT office and was advised that the request needed to be submitted by the Town, along with a Town Council resolution of support, a drawing showing the preferred parking space location, and a reason for the request. The request would be reviewed by VDOT’s Traffic Engineering Division and approved if deemed appropriate. Upon approval, VDOT will provide the Town with installation details.
Staff recommends Council discussion and, if deemed appropriate, adoption of Resolution 20240718 supporting Mr. and Mrs. Veber’s request for a designated handicap parking space in front of their residence at 507 Tazewell Avenue.
Will anyone who displays a legitimate “handicapped plate or hanging tag” be allowed to park in this space? And if not, why not?
I hope they grant this handicap parking spot for this gentleman. We discussed getting a handicap spot in front of our house but were denied because we only live in Cape Charles 6 months out of the year. I paid taxes, water bill, trash removal for 12 months. And my wife is handicapped 12 months out of the year. I was hoping to use the handicap designation only when we were in Cape Charles so not to inconvenience people when we are not there but I guess this is not permitted, it has to be a permanent spot. We love our time in Cape Charles but we also have extended family in Central New York. I know a decision had to be made but we can’t help but feel like we are not valued as half year residents by the Town Council who denied our request. Best luck to the people seeking this handicap spot, my wife also has a very difficult time walking and also uses a walker.
