Three Meet the Candidates Forums, conducted by Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore, will be held next week with all the candidates in contested races in the November election participating. CBES will be partnering with WESR Radio to provide coverage of the events.
The Forum for the two State legislature offices will be held at Occohannock School at 7 PM, October 27. Incumbent Senator Lynnwood Lewis, a Democrat, will meet his Republican opponent, Richard Ottinger; and incumbent representative to the House of Delegates, Rob Bloxom, a Republican, will meet his opponent, Democrat Willie Randall. The moderator will be Margaret van Clief.
On October 29, a Forum for candidates for four of the nine seats on the Accomack Board of Supervisors will be held at 7 PM at Nandua High School. The candidates are: for District 2, Ron Wollf and Stephen Corazza; for District 4, Kay Lewis and Paul Muhly; for District 5, Jack Gray and Harrison Phillips and for District 7, Laura Belle Gordy and George Lawson. The moderator will be Sue Mastyl.
On the same night, October 29, the Forum for candidates in Northampton County will be held at 7 PM at Northampton High School. Two seats on the Board of Supervisors are being contested: Richard Hubbard is opposed by Spencer Murray in the 4th District, and Gwen Cummings-Thompson is running against Robert Duer in the 5th District. Two constitutional offices are contested this year: Garrett Dunham is challenging Bruce Jones for Commonwealth Attorney, and Charlene Gray and Bonnie Wilson Lewis are competing for Commissioner of the Revenue. The last contest in Northampton County is for an at-large position on the School Board, for which Nancy Proto is opposed by Rodney Walker.
The Forum for the School Board seats will be at 7 PM, and the Forum for the Commissioner of the Revenue position will be at 7:30 PM. The Supervisors’ Forum will be at 8 PM, and the program will conclude with the Commonwealth Attorney Forum at 9 PM. The moderator will be Wayne Bell.
Several days in advance of the event, all of the candidates will receive several questions which may require some thought or research for their consideration. Each Forum will begin with the candidates making brief statements of introduction, and they will then be asked to respond to the several questions that were sent. Members of the audience will be invited to submit written questions for one or all of the candidates. The Forums conclude with each candidate having the opportunity to appeal for the attendees’ votes.
The Forums are, of course, open to the public. Two can be heard live on WESR Radio and simulcast online. The third will be aired at a later date. Tune to WESR and www.shoredailynews.com and www.cbes.org for further details.
