CBNERR Discovery Lab – Shells April 19th

April 17, 2022 by Wayne Creed Leave a Comment

Join VIMS – Catlett-Burruss Research and Education Lab on campus for a Discovery Lab or join us virtually from anywhere for the presentation!

Ever wondered what lived in that shell before you picked it up off the beach? That shell is the exoskeleton of invertebrates and is composed of calcium carbonate. Learn all about how these shells are formed and explore the vast shell diversity along Chesapeake Bay beaches with our guest speaker, former VIMS Marine Education Specialist Carol Hopper-Brill! Feel free to bring in your favorite shell that you would like to learn more about!

April 19, 20226pm – 8pm

Location

VIMS – Catlett-Burruss Research and Education Lab
7577 Spencer Road
Gloucester Point, VA 23062

Discovery Labs are free, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR) at VIMS. Designed with elementary-aged youth and their parents in mind, each lab focuses on a different topic related to the Chesapeake Bay and our local environment and includes exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities as well as a short presentation (from 6:30-7:00 PM) by an expert on the topic.

Reservations to this event are required due to limited space.

At this time, masks are required for all individuals indoors during this event. We ask that you monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 in the days leading up to this event and attend the Discovery Lab from your home via the live-webinar if you are experiencing symptoms.

An inherent risk of exposure to harmful pathogens like COVID-19 exists where people gather for events such as this one. Due to the contagious nature of COVID-19, VIMS/William & Mary request that all attendees follow the posted guidelines while participating in the event. By choosing to attend this event, you are acknowledging the risks, your willingness to assume those risks, and your agreement to abide by the applicable health and safety measures that are in place at the time of this event.
