Celebrating 401 Years of Hungars Cure Parish
In the heart of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, the Hungars Cure Parish is set to celebrate its 401st anniversary with a grand Founders Day event on Sunday, June 16th. This milestone will be marked by a Choral Holy Eucharist, featuring choirs from both Hungars Cure Parish and Galilee Church of Virginia Beach. The service will be held in Machipongo, VA, and promises a day filled with historic reverence and musical splendor.
The Choral Holy Eucharist will follow the 1559 Book of Common Prayer, echoing the liturgical traditions practiced on the Eastern Shore over four centuries ago. This adherence to historical practices not only honors the parish’s long-standing heritage but also provides a unique spiritual experience for attendees.
Musical Offerings
The musical selections for the event include timeless pieces by renowned composers. The choir will perform the “Old 100th” and “O Taste and See” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, alongside Harold Darke’s “Communion Service in F,” Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s “Blessed Be the God and Father,” and Edward Elgar’s “Ave verum corpus.” These pieces, chosen for their spiritual depth and historical significance, promise to enrich the worship experience.
A Glimpse into the Past
Adding to the historical ambiance of the celebration is the use of a 1742 communion silver set, a precious donation from the Honorable John Custis. This artifact serves as a tangible link to the parish’s storied past, reflecting its enduring legacy and the deep-rooted faith of its community.
Community and Reflection
Founders Day at Hungars Cure Parish is not just a celebration of the past but also a moment for the community to come together in reflection and gratitude. It is an opportunity to honor the generations that have contributed to the parish’s rich history and to look forward to its future with hope and faith.
As the Eastern Shore continues to face modern challenges, including water poverty and infrastructural disparities, events like these remind us of the strength and resilience of its communities. The Hungars Cure Parish, with its deep historical roots and vibrant present, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Eastern Shore.
