CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Town of Chincoteague has announced that it is turning off public comments on its official social media accounts, citing challenges in maintaining respectful, accurate and productive online discussions.
In a public notice, town officials said the decision is intended to support a more constructive online environment while allowing the town to continue using social media to distribute official information.
“To support a respectful and productive online environment, the Town of Chincoteague has decided to turn off comments on its Social Media accounts,” the notice states.
The town emphasized that its social media pages will remain active and continue providing official news, public notices, program information and emergency updates.
According to the announcement, the decision reflects the difficulty of consistently monitoring online comments and ensuring that public discussions remain accurate, constructive and respectful.
Town officials stressed that the change is not intended to discourage public participation or prevent residents from communicating with their local government.
“This decision reflects the challenges of consistently monitoring comments and ensuring that discussions remain accurate, constructive, and respectful. It is not intended to limit public input,” the notice states.
Instead, residents are encouraged to submit questions, concerns and feedback through the town’s established communication channels, including its official website, telephone and direct contact with town officials.
The move effectively changes the town’s social media presence from a two-way public discussion forum into a primarily one-way information service. Residents will still be able to receive municipal announcements and updates, but they will no longer be able to participate in public comment threads on the town’s official accounts.
The decision also raises broader questions about how local governments balance the challenges of moderating social media with the public’s expectation of open communication and transparency.
Social media has become an important communication tool for municipalities, allowing residents to receive timely information and engage directly with government officials. However, managing public comments can present challenges involving staff resources, misinformation, personal attacks and disagreements over local policies.
Disabling comments may reduce those challenges, but it also removes a visible forum where residents can exchange opinions, ask questions and see how officials respond to community concerns.
The town’s announcement did not specify whether the decision is permanent or whether officials might reconsider allowing comments in the future. It also did not identify particular incidents or discussions that prompted the change.
Chincoteague officials maintained that residents will continue to have opportunities to communicate with their local government through other means.
“We remain committed to transparency, accessibility, and meaningful engagement with our community,” the town stated.
