As the summer season begins, officials in Cape Charles are reminding residents and visitors about seasonal rules governing dogs on the public beach and fishing pier.
Under Town Code Section 22-321(a)(4), dogs are prohibited on the beach between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. from May 1 through Labor Day. In addition, dogs are not permitted on the town fishing pier between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the same seasonal period.
Town officials said dogs are welcome on the beach and pier during permitted hours, but owners are expected to clean up after their pets and properly dispose of waste rather than burying it in the sand.
Several dog waste stations equipped with disposal bags are located along the beachfront boardwalk for public use.
Officials noted that violations could result in fines of up to $250 per incident.
The town also reminded pet owners that dogs must remain on a leash, under another form of physical restraint, or controlled with an electronic collar at all times throughout town limits.
