NOTICE FROM TOWN OF CAPE CHARLES – The quantity of dredge material (sand) being placed on the beach has been decreased to approximately 30,000 cubic yards, with the progression of work for beach placement beginning at the north end of the beach and proceeding southward (about 600 feet) until the maximum placement volume of 30,000 cubic yards is achieved. This process will take six to ten days to complete.
Initially, residents and visitors will notice that the sand fill will not look quite as white as the existing beach sand. The difference in color is because the sand fill is derived from nearby channel dredging operations and, unlike the existing beach sand, has not had the benefit of sun, rain and wind exposure over time. Within a short period of time, however, the sand fill will bleach out and begin matching the color of the existing beach sand. In addition, the sand fill will likely have an organic odor at the time of initial placement. This odor should dissipate within a few weeks.
