Eastville: 1776 Queen Anne’s Co Minutemen Commemorative March Reception Feb. 9th at 1 pm
HTomorrow the Minutemen depart Centreville, MD just as they did 240 years ago to head for the Northampton Court=House in Virginia after a clarion call from Annapolis. Mary Margaret Revell Goodwin, Queen Anne’s historian, will lead this volunteer effort recalling the dire need to protect our region from escalating British naval aggression. Norfolk had just been burned. Until now few of us on the lower Shore have been aware of such an important maneuver.
Note: the term Court=House is historically correct. It was pointed out to the Mirror by a local historian that the double hyphen was frequently used back then.
The seventy-nine men, many of whom were barefoot upon reaching Snow Hill, arrived on Valentine’s Day and camped for many weeks while praising our hospitality to their superiors. To learn more and to honor our first soldiers, please join us next week when Eastville again proudly welcomes the Minutemen on their return to the Court Green. There will be a formal ceremony in the 1899 Courthouse Chambers and reception afterward in the historic Eastville Inn.
