Northampton County, Va. – Northampton County (Virginia) Schools closed at 11:45 a.m. after a bomb threat was called in, according to Superintendent Charles Lawrence. The schools dismissed at 11:45 a.m. due to the threat, which Superintendent Charles Lawrence says was received around 10:10 a.m. Tuesday. School officials said students would have to wait outside for an extended period of time while police K-9 units searched the school; officials decided to dismiss students and send them home.
Lawrence told WAVY 10 On Your Side the threat was division-wide and not aimed at a specific school. All three of the schools in the district were evacuated as a precaution.
Northampton County Sheriff David Doughty arrived on the scene around 10:30 a.m. , as officers with the Chesapeake Police Department were called to help sweep the schools. The threat was called to the school division’s central office.
WAVY reports that “Chincoteague Elementary School was also evacuated Tuesday after receiving a bomb threat at 9:38 a.m. The Chincoteague Police Department responded and the K-9 Unit from Worcester County, Maryland was called to help. There were no students at the school because it was a teacher work day.”
