Below is a first look at the much-anticipated Clark Nexsen proposal/diagram for head-in angle parking on Mason Avenue. There are still some aspects of the process to go–this requires a design exception that has not yet been approved by VDOT. If approved, the plan will be finalized to include updating the parallel parking on the south side of the street to reflect changes necessitated by recent development (closing old entrances, new entrances, etc.):

Front in parking is no improvement at all.
If there is to be angled parking of any kind there should be no paring on the other side of the street or the street becomes one way. Develope the rail yard parking lot with paving and better foot accesss.
Have we ever considered a designated golf cart parking zone on Mason?
Bruce is on the right track. It is great to see the responsible use of golf carts in Cape Charles, and having a designated parking area would be a logical way to manage the concurrent use of cars and carts downtown.

As two concerned liberals, we don’t understand the reasoning for this proposed design: yes 4 (four) additional accessible parking spaces would be gained,…but 20 (twenty) parking spaces would be lost?? It just doesn’t make sense…
How about making the south side of Mason golf-cart parking only? It would leave more room in the actual street and leave the reduced angle-in parking on the north side for cars only.
I have been a big supporter of front-in parking and still am ……with caveats. Losing 20 parking spaces without good additional parking to offset this loss is unthinkable. So ample parking in the rail yard lot should be created and in use before front-in parking is installed. And specific areas for golf cart parking would be helpful, especially near the library and Brown Dog. Am I misremembering or wasn’t some additional parking supposed to be installed behind the library? A lot of time and energy is being spent to attract more folks to Cape Charles so solving the parking issue is critical. The long term solution is probably a parking garage and evaluating that as part of any re-zoning thinking for the railroad property would be helpful.
Front -in parking will not solve the problem of the full size SUV and the huge trucks popular today sticking out past the designated white lines.
Making those vehicles park on the South side of Mason is a better solution. It would make it easier to go
West on Mason without having to encroach into the Eastbound lane.
(Or start writing parking tickets for improper parking)
