Cape Charles Mirror Sports Report – Wayne Creed
The Broadwater Vikings, behind solid line play, stingy defense and Major offensive performances by Tyler Major, Taylor Major and Major Morgan, outlasted a tough and talented Arcadia squad 41-21. One of the hallmarks of a coach Palmer team is the ability to control the line of scrimmage, on defense by limiting the ability to run wide or through the gaps, and on offense, by being able to run and control the clock. Against Arcadia, the Vikings dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. This led to a defensive performance that generally stymied the Arcadia attack, but also provided scoring opportunities for the offense. Viking’s twin attack of Taylor and Tyler Major was able to gap the Arcadia defense with several long, power runs. Quarterback Austin Murphy, with good protection, was able to use his strong arm and pinpoint accuracy to find openings in both the long and short game.
Broadwater started fast, with 14 points in the first quarter. After Broadwater Jumped up 21 – 0 in the second, Arcadia answered with a beautiful quarterback keeper around the right end for a 25 yard TD run to cut the lead to 21 – 6. Broadwater answered with a late touchdown, scoring with no time left on the clock. The Vikings missed the point after, yet took a 27 – 6 lead into halftime.
Arcadia stormed back in the third quarter, scoring the only touchdown behind brilliant blocking and power running. Still, Broadwater led 27 -14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth, but it was a brilliant interception by Major Morgan that sealed the victory for Broadwater. Morgan timed the pass perfectly, stepped in front, and took it all the way to the house for a touchdown.
Note: Even with Morgan’s interception, the Broadwater pass defense is a concern. Against Arcadia, the sieve-like pass defense, which got them in trouble against Greenbriar Academy, was once again on display, as the Vikings gave up two long passing touchdowns to a somewhat marginal Arcadia passing attack, late in the game.
Broadwater’s next game is October 10th against arch rival Isle of Wight. This is a home game at Bynum Field @ 1:00.
In other football, Northampton’s game was postponed due to high winds on the CBBT.
