Significant infrastructure work has been taking place near Strawberry Street and Mason Avenue. If you were in the area this week, you would have noticed heavy machinery and a massive hole in Strawberry Street.
The Mirror contacted Town Manager Hozey to get the 411 on the issue:
The property owner there was having some work done to renovate parts of their building, and they needed to have a contractor run additional utility connections. During that work, an old underground fuel tank was discovered with some residual fuel left inside, which then started leaking. This prompted a large response from the state (DEQ and VDOT). The Town also responded to help where possible, though this is mostly a state-jurisdictional issue. My understanding is that they got most of the problem cleaned up yesterday. But work will continue there for a while longer as the contractor/owner works with the state to button things up.
