EASTERN SHORE, Va. — A new initiative aimed at improving accessibility for residents with mobility challenges is gaining attention, as the Community Coalition of Myrtle Landing (CCML) rolls out its Mobility Accessibility Request Packet.
The packet is designed to help individuals living in HUD-assisted housing request critical accessibility modifications, such as wheelchair ramps and bathroom grab bars—improvements that can make it safer and easier for residents to remain in their homes.
According to the information provided, federal law protects the right of residents in HUD-supported housing to request reasonable accommodations for mobility needs. The newly released packet simplifies that process by offering step-by-step guidance and access to the necessary forms.
Organizers say the goal is to remove barriers that often prevent residents—particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities—from navigating the paperwork required to secure modifications.
“This is about making sure people know their rights and have the tools to act on them,” the coalition notes, emphasizing that accessibility improvements are not just about convenience, but safety and independence.
The packet is available to the public at no cost. Residents can access the forms by scanning a QR code included in the materials or by visiting an online folder provided by the coalition.
The effort is led by Cheryl Miele, founder of CCML, and is part of a broader push to improve housing conditions and quality of life for vulnerable populations across the region.
Local advocates say initiatives like this are increasingly important as the Eastern Shore’s population ages and more residents seek to “age in place” rather than relocate to assisted living facilities.
By streamlining access to accessibility resources, organizers hope to empower residents, reduce preventable injuries, and ensure that housing remains inclusive for all.
