Join the Northampton Historic Preservation Society at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th at Eyre Hall for a “Lecture on the Lawn” by David Scott. Situated on Cherrystone Creek, Eyre Hall has been standing tall since 1759. Come by and learn about the history of this elegant mansion, its architecture and the story of the Eyre family.
Where did the Eyre family come from? Did this property once belong to someone from the Lee family of Virginia? Was Severn Eyre Northampton County’s most notable patriot? How did Eyre Hall set the trend for Northampton County architecture in the late 1700s? How is the Eyre family connected to other notable families of Northampton County and Norfolk? How did William Littleton Eyre end up in the Debtors’ prison? All of this and more.
No fees are charged for this lecture, but we ask that individuals each consider a $10 donation to support the completion of the 1907 jail museum project. Directions to 3215 Eyre Hall Drive: Turn west off Route 13 – where you will see a NHPS sign – onto Eyre Hall Drive which is halfway between Eastville and Cheriton. Follow the gravel road to the end. There will be ample parking available. Signs will direct you.
