The soccer season came to a thrilling climax as the Northampton boys team won the Virginia High School Class 1 State Championship Saturday afternoon, defeating Westmoreland 4-1, and establishing Northampton as one of the state’s soccer hotbeds. All season, Coach Baxa’s team demonstrated skill, resilience, and teamwork. With a strong performance throughout the regionals, the Jackets redeemed last year’s loss achieved their goal of a state championship.
The Lady Jackets have also been a force, making it all the way to the semi-finals after a 10-0 victory over Altavista. Despite losing to Eastern Montgomery in the state semi-finals, Coach Bethel’s squad should be proud of a very dominant season. In each contest, the girls showcased their skill, finesse, and boasted one of the best attacks in the state. Jacky Santos Maldonado, Edith Palacio, Vanessa Mateo, and Johanna Molina helped put the rest of the state on notice.
To all the college scouts out there, we know you prefer fancy travel teams, but are you paying attention to what is happening in Northampton? You should.
