Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week Recognized Nationwide, May 11-17, 2025

Cape Charles — Communities across the United States will honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers during Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week, which runs from May 11 to 17, 2025. The annual observance pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and recognizes the dedication of police officers who continue to serve and protect.

Established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, Peace Officers’ Memorial Day is observed each year on May 15, while National Police Week encompasses the calendar week in which it falls. The event includes ceremonies, vigils, and gatherings across the country, culminating in a solemn memorial service at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

“Our nation’s law enforcement officers face risks every day to uphold the safety and security of our communities,” said U.S. Attorney General Michael Torres. “This week, we honor the fallen and express our profound gratitude to the brave men and women who serve.”

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, nearly 25,000 officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the United States since record-keeping began in 1786. This year, more than 500 names will be added to the memorial’s polished stone walls, representing officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2024.

Communities are encouraged to participate in the week’s events, which include the Blue Light Vigil, the Police Unity Tour, and the 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil, set for May 13 at the National Mall. Many state and local governments have also issued proclamations supporting the week’s observance.

The week provides an opportunity not only to remember the fallen but also to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Supporters are encouraged to display blue lights, wear blue ribbons, and share messages of appreciation on social media using the hashtag #PoliceWeek2025.
