CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Several streets near the Cape Charles harbor were closed Friday after a pump station failure caused raw sewage to back up into roadways and sidewalks, prompting officials to urge residents to avoid the area and limit wastewater use until repairs are completed.
The Town of Cape Charles announced July 3 that the Mason Avenue Pump Station had gone out of service, resulting in a sewage overflow affecting portions of Mason Avenue, Harbor Avenue and Bay Avenue.
Town officials closed the affected sections of all three streets to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic while repair crews worked to restore the system.
Virginia American Water, which operates the town’s water and wastewater system, had crews on site Friday actively repairing the pump station.
Residents were asked to avoid flushing toilets whenever possible. Town officials said reducing the amount of wastewater entering the sewer system would help minimize additional backups and allow crews to restore normal operations more quickly.
Raw sewage overflows can pose health risks because they may contain bacteria, viruses and other contaminants. Residents were advised to stay away from the affected roadways and sidewalks until cleanup and repairs are complete.
The wastewater system serving Cape Charles has been operated by Virginia American Water since the utility acquired the town’s water and wastewater systems in 2024. Since then, the company has been making upgrades to infrastructure throughout the community, including water system improvements and ongoing maintenance projects.
Town officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while crews worked to restore service. No injuries or property damage had been reported in connection with the incident; however, crews were on hand to keep 4th of July parade participants and viewers away from the contaminated area.
Reader submitted update: Just a heads up, the blue house on the corner there had raw sewage coming up through the basement which is why there’s caution tape around it (or at least there still was during the parade) I noticed you said no property damage reported.
