WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Elaine Luria voted to pass the Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act (H.R. 1836). This bill will expand eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill to count every day that National Guard members and Reservists are paid and in uniform toward benefit eligibility.
“Every day that someone serves in uniform should count toward their benefits, and the Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act will ensure that all members of the armed forces are honored with the benefits they deserve,” said Congresswoman Luria. “I am proud to support this bill to expand access to the GI Bill benefit for more than 8,000 Virginia National Guard Members and the thousands or reservists who reside in the Commonwealth.”
The Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act will allow members of the National Guard and Reserve to accrue active duty service toward the GI Bill for every day they are in uniform on federal orders, including training. Active duty servicemembers, reservists, and members of the National Guard serve side by side, often doing the same jobs and facing the same risks.
This bipartisan legislation passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 287 to 135.
