ONANCOCK — The Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society, known as Shore History, is among 19 nonprofit cultural organizations sharing $165,844 in new grants from Virginia Humanities, the state’s humanities council, as part of Virginia’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
Shore History received $9,995 to support a two-day living history event at Ker Place in Onancock. The event brought Revolutionary-era Virginia to life with reenactments, historic interpreters, demonstrations and hands-on educational activities.
The grants are part of VA250, the statewide commemoration led by the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. The General Assembly created the commission in 2020 to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War and the independence of the United States.
Organizers note that the story of the nation’s founding did not end with the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The current phase of VA250 focuses on how independence was fought for and won, and on Virginia’s central role in building the new nation.
“By understanding our past, we better understand who we are and the responsibilities we share in shaping our nation’s future,” said Carly Fiorina, national honorary chair of the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission.
Since 2023, Virginia Humanities has awarded VA250 grants to more than 84 museums, libraries, historic sites and cultural organizations across four grant cycles running through 2026.
