CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Public Works Department has reported a productive Beach Week, with significant achievements in beach maintenance and infrastructure repair. The team worked to ensure that the town’s assets located on the beach were in optimal condition ahead of the summer season.
One of the notable accomplishments during Beach Week was the successful relocation of large amounts of sand from various areas along the beach. This effort not only rejuvenated the beachfront but also ensured a safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors.
In addition to moving sand, the team also assessed areas requiring repairs and maintenance in preparation for the upcoming summer months.
Several specific repairs and improvements were completed during Beach Week, including:
- Repair of the little library located at the beach.
- Restoration of the Cape Charles sign, damaged upon entry into town, which will soon be reinstalled.
- Clearing of sand from the fishing pier during the sand-moving process.
- Removal of all sand fences from the beach to enhance accessibility and aesthetics.
- Establishment of a new entrance to the north end of the beach for improved accessibility.
Collaboration with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) resulted in progress on various projects:
- VDOT’s work on the medians on Bay Ave and embankment cutting on the west side of Bay Ave commenced, enhancing the town’s infrastructure.
In addition to beach-related tasks, the Public Works Department also carried out routine operations, including:
- Pickup and recycling of four truckloads of brush, amounting to approximately 680 cubic yards.
- Daily servicing of all municipal trash cans, totaling 33 cans per day.
- Delivery of new residential trash cans, along with necessary repairs and replacements.
