A few years ago, while attending a sporting event in Washington DC, we came across a wonderful little French spot called the Bistro Du Jour, and this is where I discovered a refreshing, classic French delight: The Nicoise Salad.
Nicoise salad, also known as “Salade Niçoise,” is a timeless French classic. Hailing from the beautiful coastal city of Nice on the French Riviera, this vibrant and nutritious dish embodies the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. With a combination of fresh vegetables, briny olives, tender tuna, and a punchy vinaigrette, the Nicoise salad takes you right back to the seas of southern France.
The roots of Nicoise salad can be traced back to the late 19th century in the bustling city of Nice, located in the southeastern part of France. Historically a popular seaport, Nice’s culinary heritage has been heavily influenced by various Mediterranean cultures, including Italian and Provençal cuisines. The salad’s name is derived from “Niçois,” the term used to describe people from Nice.
