TANGIER, Va. — The Town of Tangier is seeking approval from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for a series of marine infrastructure improvements at Mailboat Harbor, including installation of a new bulkhead, replacement of a commercial pier, and maintenance dredging near the Tangier Oil fuel facility.
According to a public notice issued by VMRC, the town has applied under permit #2025-1972 to construct 82 linear feet of new bulkhead, positioned no more than two feet channelward of the existing structure. The project also includes replacing an aging commercial pier and dredging approximately 1,500 cubic yards of material to maintain navigable depths of –5 feet below mean low water.
The improvements are intended to support continued safe access for vessels fueling and operating in Mailboat Harbor, a key hub for the island community.
Residents and stakeholders may submit comments on the application through the VMRC public portal at:
https://webapps.mrc.virginia.gov/public/habitat/comments
Comments may also be mailed through the U.S. Postal Service, provided they are received within 15 days of the public notice date, to:
Marine Resources Commission
Habitat Management Division

Hampton, VA 23651
VMRC will review all submitted comments as part of its evaluation of the proposed project.

Tangier is a sinking ship. It’s time for the captains to go down with it. Would save all of us some money!
You are wishing that an island of families to sink and Captains(watermen) to go down with it? To save ‘people’ money? Have you lost your entire mind?
You Sir, are a damned fool? May God have mercy on your miserable soul. You are just the type of people that The Eastern Shore of Va. should shun and ostracize.
Buddy I’ve lived on the shore my entire life (50 plus years) as well as being a waterman since I could walk. I know a losing battle when I see it! These people won’t change on their own. They re stuck in the past. Even if they would they can’t. Why not relocate them?
Damn good thing you are only in charge of your own imagination.
Like I said thing change . Islands erode! Just like your mind.Dementia is a terrible thing Stewy. Ever tried prevagen? I know you’re getting long in the tooth but maybe it’s not to late for you.
The next time you address me, be a man and use your real name.
My name is Francis Ulysses Beech. Your move tough guy.
60 years ago spent time in Kitty Hawk, Hatteras and Buxton N.C. carousing at the Nags Head Casino and surfing during Summer break.
It was well known, at that time, that Mother Nature EATS structures built on the shore of a constantly dynamic barrier island. …still…
Developers convinced ($$) county officials for decades to keep approving Quixotic building approvals.
And so it goes..
Tangier is now being eaten by a sinking crater and a rising sea level.
My vote is to help them out as much as we can and beware the developers seeking to PROFIT from any taxpayer based funding.
