A classified ad placed by a new teacher coming to our area set us thinking. Starting a new teaching career is daunting enough, but having to come to a rural area like Northampton, finding housing and other resources can add to the stress. The school system, of course, offers an orientation for new teachers, but that is only a few days. What happens after the school year is started?
The Mirror created this page as a place where teachers and the community can post notices for rentals, supplies, questions, and queries.
Classroom supplies, whether physical or technical are always needed, so hopefully, this platform is another avenue where the community and teachers can connect.
Many teachers will need to find a second job to make ends meets, this platform can also be used to connect our teachers with much-needed employment opportunities. Employers can post jobs, and teachers can offer services.
Isolation can also be a problem. The Mirror can also be leveraged for social needs, such as posting get-togethers or trips across the bay.

The Town Council needs to pass the accessory building legislation. We have a beautiful one bedroom, living room, bath and full kitchen small individual house for rent. Perfect for a teacher, or two.
The council should also make the accessory building tax free if it is housing a full time teacher employed by Northampton County. This can be easily verified by having the teacher submit a copy of their annual contract. If they cease to be employed as a teacher the building reverts to standard taxation for rental units in town.
The Mirror’s Teacher Resource page is a terrific idea. In terms of getting needed supplies for the classroom, I would refer all teachers , not just new ones, to DonorsChoose.org. This wonderful resource organization offers teachers anywhere in the US an opportunity to explain their classroom needs and request donations for same. And folks looking to donate can review all these requests on the website and choose a classroom request to donate to that really appeals to them. A lot of teachers don’t know about this organization so I’d urge anyone who knows a teacher to tell them to check out DonorsChoose.org and see if it can help with their classroom needs. And of course, it would be great if some Mirror readers decided to become classroom Donors ! It’s actually fascinating to read the various requests and see how creative so many of these teachers really are.
