CAPE CHARLES — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has authorized stump removal work within the public right-of-way throughout the Cape Charles Historic District beginning Monday, November 11, 2025.
The project, managed by contractor Browder-Hite under VDOT Permit No. 536-125739, will take approximately three to four days to complete. Crews will operate between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
According to VDOT, the work is being conducted for maintenance purposes and to enhance safety for the traveling public. Residents can expect temporary, minor disruptions to roadside access and parking during work hours, as well as standard construction noise from stump grinding equipment.
Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal, with all operations conducted in accordance with VDOT traffic control standards. After each stump is removed, a second crew will follow to fill and seed the area and remove debris within a few hours.
Property owners are advised to remove any perennial or annual plantings located near existing stumps in the VDOT right-of-way—specifically the space between the sidewalk and the curb or street pavement—before November 11. The Town of Cape Charles, VDOT, and the contractor will not be responsible for any damage to plantings that remain in those areas once work begins.
While this project does not require a formal Right of Entry letter, the Town and VDOT issued the notice as a courtesy to inform residents of nearby activity.
For more information, contact Bob Panek, Project Manager, at 757-331-3259 ext. 19 or via email at bob.panek@capecharles.org.
VDOT and the Town of Cape Charles thank residents for their cooperation as they work to improve the safety, integrity, and appearance of local roadways.

Kinda' on a different note: Also curious about how Eastville will be compensated or supported if catches drop.
After reading this story I suppose that there are some advantages to going full tilt Cold Turkey...
The Eastern Shore is very easy to see on that ugly necktie.
