CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Friends of the Cape Charles Memorial Library will host an evening “Friday Night Owl Prowl” on Sept. 19, offering residents a guided stroll through the Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve.
The walk, led by local interpreter Bill Dyas of REAL VA, begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a sunset view over the Chesapeake Bay before shifting to a nighttime exploration of the preserve. Participants will learn about local wildlife, including owls and other nocturnal species, and hear about efforts to protect rare plants, animal habitats and natural communities across Virginia.
The program is presented in partnership with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Library officials said the event is designed to highlight the importance of healthy owl populations on the Shore and the Virginia Natural Area Preserve System’s role in conservation.
Registration opens Sept. 5 at 10 a.m., and advance sign-up is required due to state permit restrictions. No walk-ins will be accepted. Those interested can register by calling (757) 331-1300 or visiting the Cape Charles Memorial Library.
The event will be held at the Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve at 301 Patrick Henry Avenue. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and insect repellent.
The program is free and open to the public.
