Cape Charles Town Council Weighs Downtown Restroom Options, Harbor Projects at Special Meeting

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council held a special meeting Wednesday evening to review options for new downtown public restrooms and to consider two major initiatives tied to the town’s harbor and railroad district.

The meeting, held at 6 p.m. at the Cape Charles Civic Center, opened with a discussion on Downtown Restroom Options, a long-running issue as the town works to improve public amenities for residents and visitors during peak tourism seasons. Town staff presented alternatives for design, placement, and construction, though no formal action was scheduled for the session.

Under new business, council members reviewed a proposed contract award for Phase 2 of the Harbor Boardwalk Reconstruction. The multi-phase effort aims to modernize the boardwalk area, improve pedestrian access, and replace aging infrastructure along the town’s waterfront. Phase 1 was completed earlier this year, and the second phase is expected to extend improvements further along the harbor.

Council also discussed the Harbor/Railroad Area Master Plan, an emerging long-term framework intended to guide redevelopment, traffic flow, public access, and economic activity in one of Cape Charles’ most strategically important districts. The plan is expected to address the future alignment of harbor operations, potential public spaces, and possible integration with the town’s historic railroad heritage.
