ONANCOCK, Va. — The Town of Onancock will take part in the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary with a three-day waterfront festival, “Onancock Sails Forward,” set for June 12–14.
The event is part of the broader Sail 250 celebration and will feature the tall ship Lady Maryland as its centerpiece attraction.
Hosted along the town’s historic harbor, the festival will offer visitors a chance to tour the vessel, meet its crew, and experience life aboard a traditional schooner. Organizers say the weekend will also include live music, maritime demonstrations, local vendors and a range of family-friendly activities.
Onancock’s marina has been designated an Affiliate Harbor through Norfolk Festevents’ Sail Virginia program, placing the small Eastern Shore town among a select group of waterfront communities participating in the national observance.
Unlike the larger Sail 250 gathering planned later in June in Norfolk, local organizers emphasize that Onancock’s event will provide a more relaxed and accessible experience, with smaller crowds and closer interaction with the ship and crew.
Town officials say the festival not only celebrates the nation’s 250th anniversary, but also highlights Onancock’s deep maritime roots while drawing new visitors to the Eastern Shore.
“This is a unique opportunity to showcase our waterfront and our history,” organizers noted, pointing to the town’s long-standing ties to Chesapeake Bay commerce and seafaring traditions.
The event is open to the public, with additional details on scheduling and activities expected to be released in the coming weeks.
