Cape Charles residents will have an opportunity next week to weigh in on the town’s proposed $18.8 million budget for Fiscal Year 2027, which includes an increase in residential trash collection fees and potential changes to local tax rates.
The Cape Charles Town Council has scheduled a public hearing for June 4 at 6 p.m. at the Cape Charles Civic Center, 500 Tazewell Ave., to receive public comments on the proposed budget, planned expenditures, tax rates and service fees.
Under the proposed spending plan, the town’s total budget would be balanced at $18,824,313. The largest portion is the General Fund, with projected revenues and expenditures of approximately $11.29 million. The General Capital Fund accounts for another $6 million, while the Harbor Fund totals about $1.1 million and the Sanitation Fund approximately $401,000. The General Debt Service Fund is budgeted at $30,122.
Town officials are also proposing an increase in the monthly trash collection fee. If approved, the rate would rise from the current $21.25 per receptacle to $22.12 per receptacle per month, billed quarterly.
The public notice states that changes are also proposed for some of the town’s tax rates, although specific rates were not detailed in the announcement. A complete listing of proposed tax rates is available on the town’s website.
Residents may submit written comments before the hearing by email to the Town Clerk or by delivering them to Town Hall. Verbal comments will also be accepted during the June 4 hearing.
Following the public hearing, the Town Council is expected to discuss the budget and proposed rate changes before taking a final vote during its regular meeting on June 18.
Additional budget details and supporting documents are available through the town’s agenda and meeting materials posted on the town website.
