CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles is stepping up enforcement of business license requirements for 2024. The deadline for obtaining or renewing business licenses was April 15, and the Treasurer’s Office staff has been working diligently to ensure that all businesses comply with the Town Code.
Key sections of the Town Code include:
- Section 18-40: Requires individuals conducting a business or engaging in a profession, trade, or occupation to obtain a license from the Town.
- Section 18-40 (3): Mandates a separate license for each place of business.
- Section 18-43: Requires the license to be displayed conspicuously at the place of business.
- Section 18-39: States that violations constitute a class 3 misdemeanor, with each day in violation constituting a separate offense. Per state law, class 3 misdemeanors carry a fine of up to $500.
Starting June 15, any business that has not obtained a 2024 license will receive a Notice of Violation on the door of the establishment. The notice will state, “This business is not licensed and is operating illegally in the Town of Cape Charles,” and must remain posted until the license is obtained. Additionally, the names of non-compliant businesses will be published on the Town’s website, Facebook page, and in a future issue of the Cape Charles Gazette.
