CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Public Works Department is in full swing with beach cleaning operations, now taking place every Thursday morning at 3 a.m. In addition to maintaining the beach, the team has been busy delivering trash cans to vacation rentals and residences, although grass maintenance has been challenging due to limited equipment. Fortunately, new equipment has been approved in the next budget, promising improved capabilities in the future.
Recent accomplishments by the Public Works team include:
- Beach Maintenance: Installation of a life jacket station and volleyball nets, removal of old sand fences and large debris from the south end of the beach.
- Assistance to Other Departments: Helping the Building Department with moving and assembling furniture, as well as assisting with relocating the print office on Friday.
- Work Orders and Equipment Servicing: Completion of several work orders, servicing of the 2021 F250 truck and John Deere 5100e tractor, and reorganization of the public works yard.
- Debris and Trash Management:
- Normal brush and yard debris pick-ups, including five truckloads of brush (approximately 850 cubic yards) sent for recycling.
- Daily servicing of 48 municipal trash cans.
- Dumping, swapping, and repairing residential trash cans, including the delivery of four new cans to residences, two additional cans, and three swapped cans. Two cans were cleaned after being swapped by the trash crew.
