Located at 305 Mason Avenue, the Palace Theatre has been a centerpiece of Cape Charles’ cultural life since opening in 1942. This year’s ornament beautifully captures the theater’s iconic Art Deco façade, celebrating a building that has entertained and inspired generations of residents and visitors.
Developed by William C. Parsons and designed by German émigré architect Alfred Lublin, the Palace Theatre was envisioned as the finest movie house between Norfolk and Philadelphia. When it opened on March 18, 1942, more than 1,000 moviegoers attended its premiere. The theater quickly became known for its grand design and modern amenities, including hand-painted murals, air conditioning, elegant walnut paneling, and one of Virginia’s largest movie screens.
Beyond movies, the Palace hosted big band performances, community events, and the Miss Virginia Pageants in the early 1950s. Following its closure as a movie theater in 1997, local arts advocates worked to preserve and restore the building. Today, the Palace Theatre thrives as a performing arts venue, hosting concerts, live theater, film screenings, symphony performances, and the annual International Film Festival.

The annual Cape Charles Ornament series has become a beloved tradition, showcasing the places and stories that define the town’s unique character. Proceeds from ornament sales support Cape Charles Main Street’s mission to preserve, enhance, and promote the historic downtown district.
