CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Police Department is looking to add a new officer to its ranks, opening the position to both experienced law enforcement professionals and newcomers interested in beginning a career in policing.
The Town of Cape Charles is advertising the position with a salary range of $25 to $27 per hour, depending on experience, along with a full benefits package that includes participation in the Virginia Retirement System.
Town officials say prior law enforcement experience is not required. Applicants with strong character and a solid work ethic are encouraged to apply, and the town will send a successful candidate without previous law enforcement training to the police academy.
The department said it is seeking someone with integrity, professionalism and the ability to work effectively with both residents and fellow officers.
Duties include providing a full range of law enforcement services within Cape Charles, interacting with the public and enforcing Virginia law as well as town ordinances.
Applicants must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and successfully complete a background investigation and drug screening. The town is also requiring candidates to have an unblemished record and character and demonstrate a commitment to professional law enforcement service.
The opening could provide an opportunity for an Eastern Shore resident interested in entering law enforcement without having already completed police academy training, while also offering experienced officers an opportunity to join the Cape Charles department.

However; they would have to take a substancial pay reduction.
